NATO-approved Hazard Prediction Software

One of Bruhn NewTech's main solutions is the operational software application NBC-ANALYSIS, a computerised NBC hazard prediction, NBC intelligence decision support tool, and warning and reporting tool designed to provide both military commanders and civilian emergency responders with rapid and accurate information using real time reports from source level to higher commands. The program fully automates the NBC calculations laid down in NATO's ATP-45(C) directive: and we at Bruhn NewTech ensure our software is always compatible with the internationally agreed protocols of this important reference document.

NBC-ANALYSIS is capable of producing very rapid (typically less than 30 seconds) hazard warning templates on a wide variety of electronic map types. This template is the perfect tool for delivering immediate hazard warnings organizing initial response to an NBC or CBRN event while more data on agent type and quantity, delivery means and actual (as opposed to forecast) meteorological conditions.

Model Integration for Detailed Hazard Prediction

We have successfully integrated a number of detailed prediction cloud and plume models to operate alongside the standard ATP-45 output of NBC-ANALYSIS. Some of these “integrated” versions of the core programme enable more detailed prediction of hazard downwind distances and effects to be produced for a more considered response after the initial warning and evacuation actions have been completed. Current Users

Today NBC-ANALYSIS is in use in 28 NATO nations including the US and UK, various NATO commands including the NATO School and several Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries.

The system has been deployed with the Military in many international operations from “Desert Storm” to the second Gulf war in Iraq .

The following are a few recent quotes from different operational users followed by a technical response from our NBC specialists:

"The results are provided very fast and reliably in the automated process. When the operator is out for a minute, even I - as the NBC Staff Officer with limited training - can handle the system". [NBC Staff Officer, Coalition Joint Force Headquarters]

Automated input and hazard calculations are the most important features because they enable vast quantities of information to be handled very rapidly and efficiently. The easy to use graphic user interface (GUI) eliminates many human errors and enables none-experts to operate the system successfully.

" Until we got NBC-ANALYSIS our NBC Collection Centre was physically separated from the Unit Operational Command centre for space reasons – in a completely different building". [NBC Cell Controller, Operation Iraqi Freedom]

The amount of manpower and space needed for an NBC Cell within the command centre is reduced, enabling the NBC Centre to be integrated with the other command elements. The usual alternative would be to locate the NBC Cell in a separate workspace, where it's important, life-saving contribution can easily be marginalized.

"The units can update their own positions and transmit these directly into my system at the command level and the MET Centre can do the same with all the weather reports, which are distributed directly to all users. All defence forces' NBC Centres are in coninuous contact with me via the communication module". [NBC Defence Officer, National Area Control Centre]

With NBC-ANALYSIS, the unit positions and weather forecasts are rapidly updated and the communication provides a fast and direct contact between all NBC centres using NBC-ANALYSIS. The ability to import rapidly changing data frees up the operator for more planning and NBC-support tasks for his commander.

"When the commander asks me about the potential consequences of an operational planned situation, I can simulate and calculate this within minutes providing the situation display on my map". [NBC Defence Advisor, Afghanistan ]

It is easy to respond quickly to commanders' questions about possible “What If” risk situations including assessments of collateral damage, units exposed to hazard areas and other operational consequences.

"It is much easier for me to present and for the commander to understand a NBC scenario when this is immediate available on a detailed map with the operational assets shown. My briefings to the staff are very quickly prepared by pasting the operational situation map from NBC-ANALYSIS into a PowerPoint presentation, or onto overhead transparencies and map overlays". [NBC Staff Officer, Primary Joint Headquarters]

After evaluation and calculation of all types of scenarios “What If” or “Real Incidents” NBC-ANALYSIS can present these on detailed maps with units and other facilities. Such presentations are available in a few minutes for commander's briefings or staff evaluations including the use of PowerPoint. When more appropriate, the full range of visual aids can be produced to scale for map overlays.
